Abstract

ABSTRACT

This research examines how social media use affects students’ academic performance at Katsina State Institute of Technology and Management (KSITM). Social media has become a big part of students’ daily lives. While it can help them learn, communicate, and stay informed, it can also become a major distraction that affects their studies. To study this, the researcher selected 100 students using random sampling. A total of 90 completed questionnaires were collected and analysed using both simple statistics (like percentages) and more advanced methods (chi-square and regression analysis). These helped identify patterns and test the relationship between social media use and academic performance. Findings showed that most students spend 1 to 4 hours per day on social media, mostly for chatting and academic research. The study found that too much time on social media especially for non-academic purposes can reduce academic performance. However, it also found that gender does not significantly affect how students use social media. The study recommends that students limit their time on social media, especially during exams or study hours, and focus more on using it for academic purposes. It also suggests that schools promote educational social media groups to support better learning habits.
