Antibiotic Susceptibility Profile of Uropathogenic Escherichia coli among Patients attending some Tertiary Hospitals in Katsina Metropolis

Abstract

The study examined uro-pathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) among patients attending General Hospital Katsina (GHK) and Federal Teaching Hospital Katsina (FTHK). Three hundred (300) urine samples were collected from patients with probable symptoms related to UTIs. The samples were cultured on CLED and EMB using standard procedures to obtain pure colonies. Gram stain, biochemical and antibiotic susceptibility studies were carried-out on the UPEC isolates using standard methods. Antibiotic susceptibility testing were done for 45 UPEC isolates from both hospitals. Overall prevalence of UPEC in the study population was found to be 15%. Of the 300 urine samples analyzed, 69(46%) yielded growth with 20(13.33%) positive UPEC at GHK, and 78(52%) yielded growth with 25(16.67%) positive UPEC from FTHK. The highest prevalence (48.89%) based on age was observed in the age group 31-40 years in both hospitals. Based on gender, females were observed to have higher UTIs prevalence (55.55%) in both hospitals. UPEC isolates were found to be highly susceptible to Nitrofurantoin and Imipenem while remarkable UPEC resistance were observed with ERY, CAZ, CRX, and AMP in both hospitals. Multiple drug resistant indices (MARI) ranged from 0.3 to 0.9 indicating the existence of high multi-drug resistance UPEC from both hospitals. Routine surveillance on UPEC among UTI patients is recommended. The study revealed the presence of multidrug-resistant UPEC among the population investigated, with higher rates in females. Isolates showed high resistance to common antibiotics but remained susceptible to nitrofurantoin and imipenem. Routine surveillance and targeted therapy are essential to manage resistance.
