Abstract

This study explores the effect of flooding on agricultural production of peasant farmers in Bauchi Local Government Area, Bauchi State. Using quantitative research methods, the research administered and retrieved 111 completed questionnaires from the 105 households, working to learn more about the spectrum of impacts of flood on peasant farmers' livelihoods. Results indicated that the impacts of the floods on the livelihoods of the peasant farmers were serious and disastrous; there were large crop deficits, early harvesting, and the rot of seeds, seedlings, and varieties. This then results in food shortages, undermining the main force of economic empowerment in the region. Another important part of the local economy is livestock rearing which is also put in peril since floods help worm larvae to remain on pasture affecting livestock feed quality and increasing the prevalence of animal diseases. Finally, this study highlighted the necessity for timely action to reduce the effects of flooding on agriculture in the Bauchi Local Government Area. Based on the conclusions, the study recommends, among other things, that the state government should proactively control flood risk zones and that farmers should build run-off ponds and sediment traps to reduce flooding. Moreover, the study recommends the construction of improved water channels to rivers. In addition, the study advocates for the proactive action of farmers in locating lesser flooded fields at higher altitudes for the relocation of livestock during floods, underscoring the importance of the partnership between local farmers and government agencies in fostering resilience and sustainable agriculture in flood-affected areas.
