Leveraging Genomics Data for National Security: The Imperative of Policy Integration and Forensic Applications in Nigeria.
Abstract
Genomics which entail the study of complete set of DNA in an organism is at the forefront of revolutionising various fields such as Agriculture, Healthcare and Security. National security can be enhanced by leveraging on the potentials of genomics in forensic science. Forensic DNA can be employed in identification of individuals involved in criminal activities, natural and man-made disaster and terrorism activities. The intersection of genomics and national security is increasingly critical in the modern era. In this paper, we explored how leveraging genomics data can enhance national security and foster development in Nigeria. It dissected the potential of genomics in forensic investigation and highlighted the need for the establishment of a robust national genomic database. The paper also examines the current policy landscape and provides recommendations for integrating genomics into national security strategies. Furthermore, it briefly presented the use of genomics in precision medicine and population-targeted therapy, bringing to limelight the need for a national policy tailoring transition into genomics-driven healthcare system. The paper underscores the need for a robust policy framework to harness the power of genomics for Nigeria's security and development.
