Abstract

The severity/complications originating from zoonotic infectious diseases leading to acute respiratory syndrome and haemorrhagic fever have recorded a lot of deaths. The study therefore aimed to assess the effect of zoonotic infectious disease preparedness educational intervention on knowledge and self-efficacy of students at selected public boarding schools in Kano. Quasi-experimental design was utilized for the study and the target population comprises 17 public boarding secondary schools with student enrollment of 18,151. The sample size for each group of the students is 292 and multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select two boarding schools from Local Government Areas (L.G.A.) in Bichi and Gwarzo. The data for the study was collected with the use of two (2) instruments: Questionnaire for students and Champion Health Belief Model Scale. The study comprised of two (2) schools: one intervention and one control group; data was collected using pre-intervention and post–intervention method. Data obtained was entered and analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) software version 23. Statistically analyzed results were presented using descriptive (mean and frequency) and inferential (independent t-test and paired t-test) statistics.  The findings from the study revealed an increase in the aggregate mean score for knowledge and self-efficacy for the intervention group. This shows that the intervention group knowledge increased from poor (<19) to good (>19), and also a change in their self-efficacy from poor (<15) to good (>15). The study concluded that the educational intervention preparedness strategies have a significant effect on the students’ knowledge and self-efficacy and therefore recommend that more educational program should be conducted to the wider community.
