Abstract

The persistent energy access challenge in Northern Nigeria, despite its high solar potential, underscores the need for localized, affordable, and user-friendly tools to drive the deployment of renewable energy systems. This study presents the development of an optimized Excel-based tool designed to facilitate accurate sizing of standalone solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, tailored specifically to the environmental and socio-economic realities of Northern Nigeria. The tool incorporates region-specific solar irradiance data, typical household and institutional energy load profiles, and system loss factors to generate optimal configurations for solar panels, battery storage, and inverters. By integrating automated calculations and adjustable design parameters within an accessible spreadsheet environment, the tool empowers local technicians, small enterprises, students, and policymakers to design efficient solar energy systems without the need for complex software or internet access
