Verification, Validation, and Benchmarking of a Locally Developed Excel-Based Tool for Solar System Sizing in Northern Nigeria
Abstract
This study reports the verification and validation of a locally developed Excel-based tool for solar PV system sizing, using actual performance data from field-installed systems in Northern Nigeria. The tool incorporates region-specific solar insolation, typical load profiles, and system efficiency parameters. Validation involved comparing the tool’s predictions with real-world system outputs, battery performance, load sustainability, and energy availability, across selected rural sites. Results show strong alignment between the tool’s sizing recommendations and actual system performance, with minimal deviation in power delivery and autonomy duration. This confirms the tool’s practical reliability for off-grid solar design. Its accessibility and simplicity make it a valuable resource for local technicians, educators, and rural electrification planners.
